-
Youth programming for ages 5-18yrs, we will offer opportunities for planting, harvesting, and learning through moʻolelo.
-
We are a community hub for information, resources, and support.
-
We will provide access to technology to our most under-valued communities, kūpuna and low-income ʻohana.
-
We will prioritize the health and well-being of our communities by offering a variety of health services, including access to basic needs and trauma & healing-informed care.
-
We will strengthen sustainable local economies by providing equitable opportunities for social entrepreneurship and financial capital through our market
Future Impact
Our hālau’s wishes:
Our aspiration is to establish a secure environment where our community can engage in learning, teaching, interacting, and supporting each other through Native Hawaiian customs. Our objective is to construct a facility that accommodates programs, events, workshops, health & wellness initiatives, and various activities that aim to enhance and unite our community.
Our hālau’s wishes:
We're building Hālau o Makuʻu in phases:
Short term — raise funds and finalize our design
Medium term — secure permits and break ground
Long term — a fully built center serving Puna for generations
What the Hālau Will Hold
This is our top strategic priority and one of five community-chosen priorities in Makuʻu's 2025 DHHL Regional Plan Update. When complete, Hālau o Makuʻu will house a commercial kitchen for local food entrepreneurs, permanent cultural program space, and a true gathering place.
