Impact metrics

Founded in 2019 as the nonprofit arm of the Makuʻu Farmers Association · Market open since 2001, now home to more than 100 vendors · Recipient of State of Hawaiʻi Grant-in-Aid (GIA) operational funding · A track record of helping vendors grow from market stalls into their own restaurants and businesses.

Strategic plan

Our 2023–2026 strategic plan sets three priorities: securing funding to build our community center, expanding Makuʻu Market and Māla Hoʻoulu ʻIke, and continuing to serve as a resilience hub for the greater Puna community.

DHHL Regional Plan

Our sister organization, the Makuʻu Farmers Hawaiian Homestead Association (MFHHA), completed a Regional Plan Update with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands in 2025. A beneficiary-driven vision for the next five years of the Makuʻu homestead.

Through community consultation, five priority projects were identified: homestead safety and security, a Hālau Initiative for permanent community gathering space, support for agricultural infrastructure, alternative financing and kūpuna housing, and improvements to water system governance.
