Papa Kuʻi ʻAi
ʻOhana will meet once monthly to go through the process of papa kuʻi ʻai creation.
Phase 1 of the project will occur in January 20223
10 ʻohana will embark on learning the type of wood (manakō), protocol, parts of the kalo, and pono planting practices. Participants will then learn how to cut kumu manakō. These learnings take place on a monthly basis for four months.


Phase 2 of the project will occur in May 2023
involve planting and building papa. This phase includes three parts: a) protocol - where ʻohana will learn to Oli Komo and Oli Mahalo; moʻolelo - where ʻohana will learn the moʻolelo of Hāloa and plant kalo, then take home the huli/corm; b) papa carving and sanding; c) papa kuʻi. These learnings take place on a monthly basis for four months.
Phase 3 will occur in September 2023
involves harvesting, cleaning and steaming the kalo, along with lā kuʻi kalo. These learnings take place on a monthly basis for four months.
